Betfair Casino Responsible Gambling
Every tool on the account, what each one actually does, and the Irish services that will talk to you today for nothing.
The short answer
Account settings holds four tools: deposit limits (daily, weekly, monthly), time-out (24 hours to 6 weeks), self-exclusion (6 months minimum, irreversible) and account closure. Cuts to a limit apply at once; increases are delayed. Ireland has no national exclusion register yet, so excluding here does not exclude you elsewhere. Deposit limits
The deposit limit is the only tool here that works before anything has gone wrong, which makes it the one worth setting on day one rather than after a bad month. You set an amount in euro per 24 hours, per week and per month, and the cashier simply refuses anything above it.
The asymmetry is the important part. Lowering a limit takes effect the moment you save it. Raising one does not — the request is held for a cooling-off period and then needs a second confirmation, so the version of you that wants to deposit €400 at 1am has to still want it a day later. That delay is not the casino being awkward; it is the mechanism doing its job.
Set the number against something concrete. Not "what I could afford in a good month" — what is left after rent, bills and savings, treated the same way you would treat a monthly amount spent on any other form of entertainment. Anything you would be uncomfortable telling someone about is above your limit.
Daily
Caps a single bad session. The most useful of the three for anyone who plays impulsively rather than regularly.
Weekly
Stops a bad session becoming a bad weekend. Rolls on a seven-day window, not a calendar week.
Monthly
The budget line. Set this one first and let the other two sit underneath it.
Limit planner
Work backwards from what you can genuinely afford to lose in a month. Nothing is sent anywhere — this runs in your browser.
These are suggestions to type into the account settings, not limits this page can set. If the numbers look small, that is usually the point.
Time-out
A time-out is a short lock: 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or up to six weeks. The account stops accepting deposits and play, your balance sits where it is, and it reopens on its own at the end. You cannot shorten it once it starts, and support cannot either.
This is the right tool for a specific situation — you have had a bad week, you are not in trouble, you want the option removed for a while. It is also a useful test. If a 30-day time-out feels genuinely difficult rather than mildly inconvenient, that is worth paying attention to, and the next section is the honest response to it.
Withdraw your balance before the time-out starts if you want access to the money. It stays yours either way, but processing a withdrawal from a locked account means going through support rather than the cashier.
Self-exclusion
Self-exclusion is the serious one. Minimum six months, and it cannot be reversed before it expires no matter who you ask or what you say. Marketing stops, the account closes to play, and any withdrawable balance is returned to you.
The limitation Irish players need to understand is that it is per operator. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 provides for a National Gambling Exclusion Register run by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, which would apply a single exclusion across every licensed operator at once. That register is not yet in service. Until it is, excluding here does nothing at any other site, betting shop or app, and the practical answer is to exclude everywhere at the same time rather than one at a time as each one becomes a problem.
Two things that help while you do that: blocking software on the phone and laptop, and asking your bank for a gambling block on the card. Revolut, AIB, Bank of Ireland and PTSB all offer some version of one, and unlike a self-exclusion it covers sites you have not signed up to yet.
If you are excluding because of money already lost: talk to one of the services below before you make any decision about borrowing. Free, confidential, and they deal with exactly this every day.
How to close the account
- 1Withdraw the balance first. Use the normal withdrawal route while the account is still open. It is much faster than unwinding a closed one.
- 2Say which one you want. "Close my account" and "self-exclude me" are different requests with different consequences. Be explicit; support will act on exactly what you write.
- 3Turn off marketing separately. Closure stops account emails but opt-outs live in communication preferences. Untick them before you go.
- 4Keep the confirmation. Save the email. It is the only record you will have, and it matters if there is ever a dispute about whether an exclusion was in place.
Our check: what we tested and when
Tested on a funded Irish account on 1 September 2026.
- Set a €50 monthly deposit limit. The next €60 deposit was refused at the cashier immediately, with the limit named in the error.
- Requested an increase to €200. It was queued rather than applied, with a second confirmation required after the cooling-off period.
- Took a 24-hour time-out. Login was blocked for the full period and the account came back on its own.
- Support answered a self-exclusion question in under four minutes on live chat and did not attempt to talk us out of it or offer anything in exchange.
- There is no session-time reminder switched on by default. You have to go and enable the reality check yourself, and most players never will.
