The deposit limit is the only tool here that works before anything has gone wrong, which makes it the one worth setting on day one rather than after a bad month. You set an amount in euro and the cashier simply refuses anything above it.

The asymmetry is the important part. Lowering a limit takes effect the moment you save it. Raising one does not - the increase takes 7 days and then needs your confirmation, so the version of you that wants to deposit €400 at 1am has to still want it a week later. That delay is not the casino being awkward; it is the mechanism doing its job.

Set the number against something concrete. Not "what I could afford in a good month" - what is left after rent, bills and savings, treated the same way you would treat a monthly amount spent on any other form of entertainment. Anything you would be uncomfortable telling someone about is above your limit.

A time-out is a short break you choose in the responsible gambling settings. Your balance sits where it is while you are away. Betfair's help pages that we checked do not publish the available lengths, so we do not quote any here; pick one on the settings screen and read the confirmation before you accept it.

Self-exclusion is the serious one. You can exclude for a period from 6 months to 5 years, or permanently. Request it from the responsible gambling section or through the Betfair help centre, and withdraw your balance first if you want the money.

The limitation Irish players need to understand is that it is per operator. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 provides for a National Gambling Exclusion Register run by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland, which would apply a single exclusion across every licensed operator at once. That register is not yet in service. Until it is, excluding here does nothing at any other site, betting shop or app, and the practical answer is to exclude everywhere at the same time rather than one at a time as each one becomes a problem.

1. Withdraw the balance first.

   Use the normal withdrawal route while the account is still open. It keeps the money moving while you still have full access.

2. Say which one you want.

   "Close my account" and "self-exclude me" are different requests with different consequences. Be explicit; the help centre will act on exactly what you write.

3. Turn off marketing separately.

   Closing an account is not the same as opting out of marketing. Check your communication preferences before you go.

4. Keep the confirmation.

   Save the email. It is the only record you will have, and it matters if there is ever a dispute about whether an exclusion was in place.

Tested on a funded Irish account on 1 September 2026.

• Set a €50 monthly deposit limit. A €60 deposit was then refused at the cashier.
• Requested an increase to €200. It was not applied at once: the published rule is 7 days, then a confirmation from you.
• Looked at the time-out option in the settings. The help pages we checked do not list the lengths, so we have not quoted any.
• Self-exclusion is offered for 6 months to 5 years or permanently, and closing the account goes through the help centre.
• Betfair publishes no customer phone line for Irish players, so contact is by live chat or message from the help centre.
