In short: Betfair Casino has daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits, time-outs of 24 hours up to 30 days, self-exclusion for 6 months up to permanent, and account closure. A lower limit applies at once, while a higher one takes 7 days. All under My Account.

Deposit limits

A deposit limit sets the most that can be paid into your account over a chosen period. Betfair Casino lets you choose a daily, weekly or monthly limit, and you are offered the chance to set one while you register. If you skipped it then, nothing is lost: open My Account, choose Safer Gambling Tools, select Deposit Limit, pick the period, enter the amount and confirm with your password.

The period rolls instead of resetting on a fixed day. Betfair's own example is a weekly limit that does not run from Monday to Monday. It looks back over the previous seven days from the moment you try to deposit, so money you paid in on Tuesday keeps counting until its own seven days are up. A daily limit behaves the same way over 24 hours: use the whole allowance at 13:01 and the next deposit is possible at 13:02 the following day.

  • Lowering a limit: effective immediately, so it is the right move after a heavy week.
  • Raising or removing a limit: takes 7 days, and then you are asked to confirm on your next login. The wait is the point of the tool.
  • Loss limits: a separate tool. A gaming loss limit covers casino play and counts net losses after winnings, over a day, week, month or year, with the same 7-day rule for increases.
  • Other brands in the group: a tool set on your Betfair account does not pass itself on to accounts you hold elsewhere in the same group.

Deposit limits planner

Start from the amount you treat as entertainment spending. The planner shows a daily, weekly and monthly limit that fit it.

Daily limit€0
Weekly limit€0
Monthly limit€0

Lowering a limit applies at once. Raising it waits 7 days and then needs your confirmation on login (the Betfair Ireland and Rest of World rule).

Plain maths in your browser, nothing is saved or sent. Weekly is the budget divided by 4.33 weeks, and the daily figure splits the week over your sessions (or over the whole month if you leave sessions empty). These are numbers to type into Safer Gambling Tools, this page cannot set them for you.

If the figures look small, that is usually a sign the plan is working. Pick a budget you would not miss, then set the monthly limit first and let the weekly and daily ones sit underneath it. For a wider look at the tools, see responsible gambling at Betfair Casino.

Time-out

A time-out is the gentlest way to step away: you pick a short block, and for that long you cannot bet on any Betfair product. It suits a bad week or a stretch when you simply want the option out of reach, without closing anything.

How long

Betfair lists 24 hours, 48 hours, 7 days and 30 days. One of its help articles also mentions 72 hours, so treat the settings screen as the final list.

No way back

Once it starts, you cannot reverse a time-out during the period you picked. Decide with a clear head, then let it run.

Whole account

The block applies to all Betfair products, not only the casino. Unmatched Exchange bets are cancelled and the stake returns to your balance.

Ends by itself

When the time is up the account opens again, with no call or form needed. Your balance stays on the account in the meantime.

You find it in the same place as the limits: My Account, then Safer Gambling Tools, then the option that fits. Betfair's pages do not say whether withdrawals are possible while a time-out runs, so if you want money in your bank first, request the withdrawal before you start.

A time-out is also a useful test. If a 7-day break feels hard rather than mildly annoying, that is worth noticing, and the next section is built for it.

Self-exclusion

Self-exclusion is the serious option. Your account stays closed for the whole period you chose, and Betfair says it will not be reactivated under any circumstances before the period ends, unlike an ordinary closure request. The three tools side by side:

Self-exclusion6 months - permanentNo
Regular closureOpen-endedYes

Swipe to see all columns

Betfair's long-break lengths are 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years and permanent. To start one, open My Account, choose Safer Gambling Tools and select Setup Self Exclusion. You can also ask customer service to set it, which some people find easier on a bad day.

You do not have to give up everything. A product exclusion blocks either all gaming products (casino, live casino, bingo, Exchange games and poker) or virtual sports only. Sports betting is set separately, so if your trouble is with a sportsbook, say so when you ask. When the period ends, a reactivation is a request to Betfair's Safer Gambling Team, not an automatic return, and Betfair says reopening is not guaranteed.

Betfair calls this a joint commitment: it takes reasonable steps to stop you reopening or opening a new account, and you promise not to try. It also says it will try to block matching accounts at other brands in its group, but the group's shops are not covered and some brands outside the UK are not covered either. Treat the exclusion as covering Betfair, and repeat it wherever else you play.

Ireland does not yet have a single place to do that. The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 provides for a National Gambling Exclusion Register that is not yet live. Until it is, one exclusion protects you only at the operator that holds it. That is why the extra blocks in the help section below matter more here than they would in a country with a working register.

How to close the account

  1. Move your money out first

Betfair recommends withdrawing any remaining funds before you close. Follow the normal withdrawal route while the account still has full access.

  2. Choose the kind of closure

Regular closure is for people who no longer want to bet but may come back. Self-exclusion and a short break of 1 to 30 days are the other routes, and both are in Safer Gambling Tools.

  3. Open the Close My Account page

Follow the instructions on screen, then enter your password and press Confirm. Betfair points out that if your worry is about your gambling, one of the other options may suit you better.

  4. Ask for data deletion if you want it

Closing an account does not erase your personal data. A deletion request under GDPR is a separate step, and Betfair says a request that qualifies is processed within 30 days, though the right is not absolute.

  5. Keep the confirmation

Save whatever Betfair sends you. If you change your mind later, a regular closure can be reopened by contacting customer service through the help centre chat.

The choice between the second and third options is the one that counts. A regular closure can be undone whenever you ask. A self-exclusion cannot, and that difference is exactly why people who close an account because of their gambling are usually better off picking the exclusion.

What players say

Players who talk about these tools tend to start with the deposit limit, because it feels like a budget rather than a ban. The usual story is a monthly figure chosen on a calm evening, then forgotten for weeks, until a long night when the cashier simply says no. Most describe that moment as a relief more than an annoyance.

The 7-day wait on raising a limit gets a lot of credit. People say it removes the argument with yourself: by the time a higher limit would apply, the urge has usually gone and the old figure looks fine. A short time-out after a rough week is described as a reset, and people come back with the same limits in place.

Those who chose a longer self-exclusion say the clear start and end took away the daily negotiation. Many pair it with blocking software on their phone and a gambling block from their bank, and call that combination the first time it felt settled.

Where to get help

The tools above work on one account. These organisations and blocks work on you and on your money, whichever site you open next. Every support service named here is free, and you can contact them while you are still playing.

Your bank can block it

AIB and Bank of Ireland have gambling blocks you can switch on in the banking app, and Revolut has an in-app block that takes about 48 hours to lift once you ask. Unlike a self-exclusion, a bank block also reaches sites you have never signed up to.

Blocking software

Programs such as Gamban and BetBlocker stop gambling sites and apps from loading on a device. Betfair itself points to both in its help centre. Install them on every phone, tablet and laptop you use, and ask someone you trust to hold the password.

Self-exclusion FAQ

Q1How do I self-exclude from Betfair Casino?

Log in, open My Account, choose Safer Gambling Tools and pick the self-exclusion option. Betfair offers 6 months, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years, or permanent. If you would prefer not to do it yourself, customer service can set it for you.

Q2How long can a Betfair Casino time-out last?

Betfair describes a time-out as a block of 24 hours, 48 hours, 7 days and 30 days, and one help article also lists 72 hours. The settings screen in Safer Gambling Tools shows the exact choices. You cannot reverse a time-out once it has started.

Q3Can I end a Betfair self-exclusion early?

No. Betfair says an excluded account stays closed and is not reactivated under any circumstances during the period. When the period is over you contact the Safer Gambling Team to ask for reactivation, and Betfair says reopening is not guaranteed. A permanent exclusion cannot be reactivated.

Q4Does self-exclusion at Betfair Casino cover other gambling sites?

Not in general. Betfair says it takes reasonable steps to block matching accounts at other brands in its own group, but the group's shops are not covered and some brands outside the UK are not covered either, so you need to exclude from each one yourself. Other operators, betting shops and apps are separate again.

Q5When does a new deposit limit start to apply?

For customers in Ireland and the rest of the world, lowering a limit is effective immediately. Raising or removing it takes 7 days, after which you are asked to confirm the change when you next log in. Limits run on a rolling period, not on calendar weeks or months.

Q6Does Ireland have a national self-exclusion register yet?

The Gambling Regulation Act 2024 provides for a National Gambling Exclusion Register that is not yet live. Until it is, an exclusion only covers the operator you made it with. Blocking software and your bank's gambling block fill the gap.

Q7What is the difference between closing my account and self-excluding?

A regular closure is for people who no longer want to bet, and you can reopen the account at any time by contacting customer service. A self-exclusion is a commitment: the account stays closed for the whole period you chose. Where gambling is the cause, self-exclusion is the right choice.

Q8Where can I get free help with gambling in Ireland?

GamblingCare.ie, Problem Gambling Ireland and Gambling Therapy all offer free support, and you can contact them while you are still playing. Your bank can also block gambling payments on your cards. The responsible gambling page on this site lists the helplines.

Take a break whenever you need one

Limits, time-outs and self-exclusion all live under My Account, in Safer Gambling Tools, and they are easiest to use before you play rather than after. If anything here sounds familiar, read responsible gambling and talk to one of the free services.
